You can always find a friend to hurt you when you're down

Im taking names for this orgy im organizing. The list starts with Sleater-Kinney and the boys i found who like them. Theyve been experiencing a bit of an indie/hipster backlash of late it seems but as their Coachella set proved this afternoon, these chicks still fucking rock. The things I'd do to Corin Tucker.

I didnt go to church today.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs just ended. I added Karen O to the list with the stipulation that she must let her hair grow out a little. Someone said she reminded them of the fragile kid in Little Giants. It made me giggle. They pretty much sucked live. but check out Imaad Wasifs new solo album. Ill post some tracks tomorrow. (shhh pretend it wasnt here)
Bloc Party next!
and Devendra Banhart was fucking great! it was like a damn time warp im stoked as hell to catch him in chicago this july

have i mentioned how excited i am about that?
it'll be all sorts of

and

i cant find a smiley for what else it will be but take a guess and use your imagination

anyway
for you fine reader(s), Ive got the promised Midlake

I just went to their allmusic and noticed that AMG has listed Radiohead as an influence. Um okay? I dont hear it. I mean, id be more likely to call them the anti. Their new album Trials of Van Occupanther has been likened to classic Fleetwood Mac. That I kinda get and i like it a lot.
A Dallas paper gave an early review and called "Young Bride" an early favorite for song of the year. Maybe it was some Texas love but the song is pretty damn good. Personaly i prefer "Roscoe". itll be out in June last I heard.

woooo Bloc Party is pretty cool live. Id rather see more Banhart

im particularly interested in Banhart as hes playing Pitchfork fest and ive heard several differing opinions concerning the quality of his live show. I dig his stuff so heres hoping hes able to convey that intrigue to the stage. Ted Leo will be at P4K as well but i already know he kicks ass live.
----------------------------------------------

My dads always on my case about my skipping church on Sundays so this morning ive got a "religious" band
only not really

Anathallo have taken to describing themselves as a "marching band gone wild". Critics have hailed them as a unique blend (only not really ) of Animal Collective and Sufjan Stevens.
I have a couple tracks off their 2006 release Floating World for you all today and wanted to include some highlights from their past catalog
but there just arent any.
Floating World is a drastic departure from their old sound of, well, sucking ass. I like it a lot though.
Heres an excerpt from a feature in Paste Magazine from last october...

...While initially conceived as something akin to a youthful post-punk Stomp! ensemble, Anathallo has been through several incarnations, both stylistically and personnel-wise. The band’s fifth release, Floating World, is tentatively scheduled for a January release. “[By this album] we exorcized the demons of our teenage angst and our necks began to hurt from all the head banging,” Joynt says. “I think we just found different dynamics and structures fascinating and challenging. The Beach Boys reentered the picture, as well as some Russian composers and Nathan’s roots in Jazz. Oh, and Yes. The band, I mean.”

so lets ignore the fact that they used to be really bad and enjoy these tracks from floating world....

Genessaret (going out over 30,000 fathoms of water)
Hanasakajijii (four: a great wind, more ash)

you can pick up a copy of Floating World here, Anathallo Store , but scroll at your own risk!

these guys are playing Lollapalooza. Theyre on my list of "if no one else is on at the same time"
they sound like theyd be fun to see live.
---------------------------------------------------------------

Heres one my dad would not approve of

I first heard of Sparks in a discussion about Queen where i was informed that Queen had basically ripped their sound from these guys. Its pretty obvious with only a moments listen that its true. Unfortunatly neither of the brothers Mael has a voice even near on par with Mercury's. Not that they havent enjoyed success. 2006 has seen the release of their 20th studio album in three decades of work, Hello Young Lovers.
Its... interesting

  I have a history
i've lost another somewhat lengthy post with a firefox crash.
damn it

Leonard Cohen is one of the better songwriters of the past few decades (see with Melberg i said this generation, see). Hes Canadian. we wont fault him for it
a few of my favorites of his

Hallelujah popularized by Jeff Buckley, and fucking Shrek
If it be His Will
Everybody Knows my Cohen introduction, via the fucking classic Pump up the Volume. but hey, its no Shrek

I've got to admit that i've been pretty into American Idol since day one. Elliott Yamin is one of my favorite vocalists that theyve ever had. I love his voice but also him. Not just because hes a goofy looking fucker, but also because he seems to have a genuine love of music. His rendition of Donny Hathaway's "A Song For You" ( Foster's [hes a legend, dont get me wrong] fucking with the arrangement notwithstanding) inspired me to lay into some Hathaway tunes this week.
One of the great, and wildly underappreciated, soul singers of the seventies, Hathaway put out just two studio albums before his death in 1979.

A Rose by any other name
the era of higher security begins... my apologies to the blogs and forums who were stealing my links, blame DH. No more posting full albums either. Id only done that a couple times out of laziness but the way ive got things set up theres no room for being so careless anymore. Funny shit that the imaad wasif album wasnt linked correctly anyway, and it wasnt the only thing. LAZY!

Id said in one of the posts that got deleted that id had words with one Mr Peter Green of Double Agent records concerning the hosting of Rose Melbergs new album Cast Away the Clouds. The album has since been removed, and was never posted here anyhow, but she really is excellent so I asked him if it'd be alright if i put a few tracks up.

Rose has been called a modern Nick Drake. She is, no doubt, one of the better song writers of our generation.
Cast Away the Clouds is deeply introspective and at times teetering on the edge of "dark".
If the singer songwriter genre is something you're at all into, you defintely need to check this girl out.
