I put it that way because the most notable thing about it is probably that I left the house, I realized how much i fucking need live music to survive. It was a fucking shot in the arm like nothing else could have been. Id gladly give up the cigarettes if someone promised to feed this addiction with some regularity. I hadnt been to a proper concert since midway through last September. Seriously tragic.
Nikka was awesome too, but I still would rather be going on Friday for Daaaahveeeeeeed Garza and Colin Hay. Shes about five months pregnant and still the funkiest bitch around. You could tell she was holding enough soul for two. She pulled out some covers (though if you're a fan of hers you know she does the same damn set for every "tour") A couple old ones that I'd never heard live from her a tune off the Color Purple ost , "Miss Celie's Blues" and Nina Simone's "I'm Gonna Leave You". Also a couple others that shes just thrown in for this run of shows, John Lennon's "Jealous Guy" and The White Stripes "Denial Twist". They were alright. Id been told they were coming and kind of expected more. I guess I can't fault the pregnant lady.

Speaking of Jack White...Paste magazine featured a list of their 100 greatest living songwriters in this months issue. It was decent (not great) for the first fifty. It got pretty ridiculous from there on. White was 59, i dont count him among the ridiculousness, hes pretty kickass (but 59?). They threw in a lot of trendy picks in the latter half, clearly pandering to their readership. Even considering something like this is kind of absurd, but they gotta fill pages i guess.I dont think I've ever posted anything from Nikka here and im too lazy to check so here goes.

Butterfly Rocket (1996)

Get Off of my Sunshine
Come Clean
Grab Hold

Everybody Got Their Something (2001)

Some Kind Of Beautiful
Hope It Felt Good

Can'tNeverDidNothin' (2005)

Funkier Than A Mosquitos Tweeter
On &On <---- you must have sex with this song on. Not so much by choice. I actually stopped listening to her completely. Im a sensitive little twit. I went out for a smoke before the show started and ran into her guitarist, Josh Lopez. We talked mostly about his difficulty in picking up ass but also about my long absence

JLo: Hey we haven't see you in a while!
me: yeah i missed you guys i havent been able to come
JLo: You havent been able to come? what do you have a baby or something
me: NO! just stuff...

stuff was there last night. I was under the impression she wouldnt be. i was under the impression the only reason i was invited to attend was that she wouldnt be. oh well
heres to not so pleasant surprises.
at least i didnt throw up this time

Nikka will be at Largo again next Tuesday. and then a couple dates supporting Van Hunt, whose album is getting much better reviews than i expected. now (also my ill-advised ornamentation but hes right about that). i prefer my way damn it. i did completely fuck the bridge though
Walls

and lolz of all lolz heres my nina simone cover. i think i dislike it more and more each time i play it. i also fuck it up worse each time i play it. i actually made up that wonderfully fucked chord sequence on my own. its the first time ive covered a song i couldnt find a tab for not much of an accomplishment considering
<a "singer-songwriters" of the last ten or so years. Quotes are neccesary because dude fucking rocks but has a way with words that demands acknowledgment. "rocker-songwriter" maybe? I found him when he had his first major label shot in 1998, releasing This Euphoria on Atlantic and getting just enough MTV2 love to enter the conscience of music lovers but not quite enough to enter their music collections. That album was one of the best of my high school years, no matter how few people have actually ever heard it. He turned things up a notch on the 2001 follow-up Overdub, but still failed to move many units.
So he's back to being ridiculously well-respected by his peers while his talents languish in the discount bin. Fiona Apple has brought him along on her last few tours and someone picked one of his tracks in their top five for Rolling Stone. The calf fondling would have made my evening if My Morning Jacket's performance with the Boston Pops on Letterman hadnt already done so.
SO even though Id planned on some Dahveeed Garza, hes been bumped by MMJ, much like Piven from Letterman all those years ago, according to that interview. Hopefully he doesnt take it personally and drink too much sake.

I think I've told my MMJ story but im not sure, and again, too lazy to check. They opened for Ben Kweller the three times i saw him in 2002 and were fantastic. The timing was perfect as i was just moving from my "everything but country phase" into my "wow country is actually some of my favorite shit. MUSIC IS AWESOME!" phase, spurred on by my discovery of Ryan Adams et al...
These cats are making much more authentic country music than any of the jackbags you'll see on CMT, though moving nearer just straight rock with each release. Toby Keith aint got shit on Jim James.
It was fantastic to see them in suits and shit looking all polished, well aside from the hair. I remember in '02 James wore the same damn jeans the entire tour. Not that it was a long read but that I've intended to read it for ages and only just picked it up last weekend. It was fantastic. Even if you didnt enjoy the movie (which would flabbergast me), I'd reccomend it. I was in tears throughout the last few chapters. I was nearly there anyhow for reasons unrelated but Rob's revelations at the end there killed me. I relate entirely too much.
thats always been my trouble

that and the fact that i never do anything right.

Two situations, mostly incomparable except for the similairty in outcome, that i handled nearly opposite each other, and i got them both wrong anyway. and im not even quite sure the fuck i did wrong this time but it must have been something i guess because my phone never rings anymore.

and there go the waterworks again. i think im going to throw up

i dunno. its hilarious because in less than forty-eight hours i went from talking about how i feel so good now and like i might actually be stable for once to spending an entire day in bed soaking my pillow.
I deal far too often in extremes

kind of like how im trying to evaluate things and all ive come up with are these two lists. one with everything ive done wrong in my entire life and one with everything, no matter how insignificant, ive done right

one of these needs multiple pages
and one of thses lists is empty save for an underlined title

im going back to bed now.

hey....fuck you

I prepared (uploaded the shit i mean) this entry about three weeks ago. I'd just watched the Grey's finale in which a couple of utterly fantastic tunes were played (as though this were something out of the ordinary for GA). Things have kept me from completing the addition. The first two attempts it was fucking firefox crashing. It seems it only ever does that when I'm doing this. Wtf mates?

I experienced my first true case of downloaders remorse when i spied for the first time, a copy of Amos Lees album for sale. It was at starbucks. I was picking up my usual SoyVentiiIcedChaieasyontheice on the way to somewhere other than class and it was sitting in the little album display on the counter. Id been enjoying it for months prior but had never once seen the cover, or dude's face. Something in Amos's eyes makes his voice all the sweeter. The barista was hot. I told him all about this epiphany I was having and, I think, convinced him to tuck a copy of the album beneath his apron. Because this is a fantastic record but, also because I would have thought him hotter with a bulge beneath his apron.
Since that day Ive made a point of seeking out artwork for every album i have. thank you tag and rename
Lee is a philly born soul/jazz man who is ridiculously underappreciated. Hes on fuckign Blue Note for chrissakes kids! I suppose that could provide an excuse for the many who write him off as a male norah jones rip off. Personally, I adore him.
This record is perfect for a(many) melancholy night(s) spent sipping whiskey alone. I tried sipping whiskey straight this weekend. It didnt go so well. mixed or shot is the way to go

Amos Lee - Amos Lee

Arms of a Women
Colors

Snow Patrol are responsible for some of the better music that is getting top 40 radio play now a days. at least thats what im told. I dont listen to much radio.
These guys have mastered the catchy as hell pop/rock track. Their 4th album, Eyes Open, is not quite on par with their breakout smash Final Straw, but its no let down either. The Scottish quartet have more or less picked up where they left off and delivered six fantastic tracks of anthemic riffy sing along etc etc rock. The only problem is it gets a little boring in the second half. yeah. It would probably contend for my release of the year so far (or top 10 anyway) if it were scaled back to an EP. But it seems it was in fact their intention to "make this go on forever".
ah well. its still an excellent album. I figured out how to fix it myself and my only real complaint is that they failed to respond to my support request in the six hours before i remembered to withdraw the ticket.
fyi... if you use dreamhost and ever get a "bad_httpd_conf" error, in the user cp goto manage domains -> edit, then change settings without altering anything
takes a second but forces the apache config to regnerate and clears up whatever issue there was

when there was a DMCA issue i had responses in minutes, so im not neccesarily unhappy with their customer service. but... i've heard tons of horror stories so hopefully this kind of thing doesnt become common

The other night i was reminiscing over some of the shitty music i used to listen to. I brought up Jodeci, someone else mentioned Ralph Tresvant, and then i remembered Johnny Gill. These were the artists who recorded some of the first albums I ever owned, all on cassette tape.
awesome shit, cassette tapes. I used to just record hours of radio and then re-record the songs i liked
because i was cheap and stole music even then

it was the early nineties
this is what was blasting through my walkman
and how awesome were those things! changed the world, they did

Johnny Gill - S/T (1990)

My favorite New Edition alumnus. [So maybe I lost my head there for a second.] I always have the best intentions when it comes to playing music and I suppose I get lost sometimes along the way. The last thing I want to do is cheat anybody out of anything. I am just trying to connect on some sort of level that means as much to me as it does you. And while you're paying, I'm playing and we both have to, ya know, "deal" . I think sometimes I want to make everybody feel like they are at home in the venue and not to panic or freak out and let things take shape because I AM freaking out a little. I have a bit of stage fright but I promise you this I have not and did not take to the stage drunk on the european or the U.S. tour. It's impossible. I can't function playing guitar drunk. My wrist won't work that way. I learned that lesson. This is TRUE. I have A (one) glass of wine on my way into the wings and two or three thousand cigarettes before. I wait until my hands stop shaking and I dive in. Sometimes you guys are a tough lot to charm but I so want to communicate this strange thing I have in writing and playing this music that I'm willing to forego being terrified enough to get out there and see what I am capable of. It's all I know. I have been alone trying this since I was 15 and I am no different now than I was then. At least in the way I see myself not trying to do anything but be funny, be real, be anything but boring. I know I lose some of the audience in the slapschitck parts but whatever. There are plenty of canned food artists out there for them. I want to be in the moment and I want to take chances and I want to see if I can find that magic moment even I didn't know was possible. That leads to some pretty embarasssing dead ends. But once in awhile, goddamn if I can't feel my own heart beat for a second and some of that pain goes away and I am just in the zone. In the place I was the first time I felt comfortable in my own skin, playing and singing and sharing something that was gone as soon as the music stopped.
So these risks, these shows, or rather, tours without the same set list every night esp. the solo ones, they really push the envelope but I dont feel like Ill grow or youll get anything but sterile crap unless I try and take it further. And listen, I am. I am trying my ass off.
So If I disappointed some of you, I am so sorry. That lets me down too. And if I took a few songs further out, maybe put a few smiles on a few faces or made somebody move along to the story, then I am glad. The rabbit doesnt always come out of the hat unfortunately but one day when we are far from grandmas backyard and theres not a bedsheet for a curtain and I actually get my own cape, maybe it will ALWAYS be magic.
Until then, Im just human, and I have my faults. Im a bit nervous at solo shows and I am getting alittle better as I go. Maybe I talk a bit too much when Im nervous but its nerves not drinks that makes me want to feel like there isnjt any reason to be scared. And as far as the green goes, well, ask Bill Hicks about that one. Thats just self respect.
I am humbled by your loyalty and hurt when you feel let down but I have nothing but respect for those that have taken the ride with me.
I regret my freakout. I fully intend to take my website back and own it privately and stream shows when I can and print set lists so people can check in and see whats happening out there on the road.
I will say this.
There were some out of hand things said about those shows in certain publications that were outright lies. The setlists and UNION CURFEWS prevent me from playing any later than they allow without house lights coming up in theaters. But you get to sit down and be cozy and nobody wants to stand for an hour and a half at a solo show with some sad weird bastard moaning about this and whinging about that in c minor. I will print the set lists , the time I hit stage, and the time I left stage for each of the last four shows for everyone to see for themselves. Prehaps I will print the unclaimed comp tickets from two of the shows where I got flamed and yet they could not mention one song or album of which I played a song from.
Either way I am taking accountability for my part of this exchange, this live solo show setting.
It would be nice to see local journalists do the same and not do articles on what my hair looks like or who choose to fuck which is none of their buisness. The lack of writing about the music at my shows matches the time it takes me to start a fucking song it seems. lose lose if you ask me. dont ask them. they dont got to like anything for a living. i dont blame them reaqlly. i confound myself on a daily basis. you should see some of the shit i manage the put into my eggs. not even omlettes. just mashed eggs.
With all due respect, I appreciate everyone who took their chances, took their seats, and came along for the ride.
Im trying but Im not always good and never advertise anything but my flaws./ Im just looking for the beauty in them and in all this I guess.
Thank You for Participating and I hope to look back one day and be nothing but proud, proud and on top of a martini cloud watching the fireworks.
Yours Truly,
Ryan.
love u guys and hope the salad days of summer cqarry you someplace pretty and safe on a blueberry breeze.
stay sweet.
---------------------------------------------------------
hahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

but at the same time the shit makes me really sad. while its beyond presumptious of adams to include himself in a list like the one he did, it is true that all too often the best artists are fucking nuts and beyond self destructive.
sad

the story of how i came to be a fan of his is far more interesting than others ive told.

near the end of the summer of 2002 i went to see a Ben Kweller show at the Roxy here in Los Angeles. I happened to have an extra ticket because i had bought two and then been given two by ATO, but only found one other person to go after finding out I'd have four. The show was sold out because BK is all sorts of awesome. As i was turning away from the ticket window i noticed a father and his young son standing at the curb looking sad. Turns out they'd seen Ben on Leno or something the night before and had come out hoping thered be tickets available. I gave them my extra and wished them luck in finding one more. An hour or so later I was sitting on the edge of the stage waiting for the show to start when the guy comes toward me with a big smile on his face saying theyd found someone looking to sell just one ticket! He thanked me profusely and then asked me to wait just one second, he wanted to give me something. I told him over and over a drink would be fine (I was 19 and couldnt buy my own, or so i thought) but he insisted on running out to his car. He came back with three burned cds. His son protested. Dad told him to shut up, they could burn another copy of each.
I thanked him and glanced at what hed handed me. I only recognized one name. They were copies of Ryan Adams - Gold, Beulah - The Coast is Never Clear, and Chris Isaak - Greatest Hits.
If i could see that guy now id give him a giant bear hug. When I have kids I imagine things being quite similar.
Besides Ryan and Beulah, I also "discovered" My Morning Jacket that night. They opened and were amazing.
At the after party I ordered drinks at a bar for the first time and bumped into Kirsten Dunst while dancing
That was an awesome night.
So anyway... I listened to Gold the next day and loved it. Not immediately. I recognized New York, New York from its video being played incessently, but it took some growing. Then i listened to Heartbreaker, and I was done.
